What an endocrinologist treats

Endocrinologists are physicians who train in internal medicine and then in hormones and metabolism, which is how your body turns food into energy. The work covers diabetes, thyroid conditions, osteoporosis and other bone conditions, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and other hormone conditions, and disorders of the pituitary and adrenal glands.

Conditions we treat

  • Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes (blood sugar that is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range), with medicine and lifestyle plans built around your routine.

  • Thyroid disorders

Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), Hashimoto’s disease, Graves’ disease, and thyroid nodules (lumps in the thyroid).

  • Bone disorders

Thinning bones (osteoporosis) and low bone density (osteopenia), with a check of your fracture risk and a treatment plan.

  • Reproductive hormonal conditions

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), hormone changes during perimenopause and menopause, and other hormone imbalances.

  • Pituitary disorders

Growths and other conditions of the pituitary, a small gland at the base of the brain that controls many other hormones, when they cause too much or too little of a hormone.

  • Adrenal disorders

Nodules on the adrenal glands (small glands on top of the kidneys), adrenal insufficiency (too little adrenal hormone), and too much cortisol (a stress hormone) or aldosterone (a hormone that helps control salt and blood pressure).

Common questions

When should I see an endocrinologist?

Talk to your doctor about whether seeing an endocrinologist may be the right next step for you. Endocrinologists often help with:

  • Diabetes that’s hard to keep under control
  • An abnormal thyroid test, or a lump in your thyroid (thyroid nodule)
  • Thinning bones (osteoporosis), or a broken bone from a minor fall
  • Irregular periods or signs of PCOS
  • Something found in your adrenal or pituitary gland on a blood test or scan

Do you treat Hashimoto’s?

Yes. Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid, and it is a common cause of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Dr. Shah also treats Graves’ disease, an overactive thyroid, and thyroid nodules.

Can an endocrinologist help with PCOS?

Yes. PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a hormone condition that can cause irregular periods, acne, extra hair growth, and insulin resistance, when the body doesn’t respond well to insulin. Dr. Shah treats PCOS and other reproductive hormonal conditions, with a particular interest in women’s health.

Should I see an endocrinologist for diabetes?

Many people with type 2 diabetes get their diabetes care from a primary care clinician, such as a family doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. An endocrinologist can help if you have type 1 diabetes, if your blood sugar is hard to keep in range, or if your A1C stays above your goal.

Do endocrinologists treat osteoporosis?

Yes. Osteoporosis (thinning bones) is often linked to hormones, including the changes that come with menopause. Dr. Shah reviews your bone density scan and your risk of breaking a bone, looks for other causes, and makes a treatment plan with you.

Do I need a referral to see an endocrinologist?

No. You can request an appointment directly or call 646-389-0001.

What happens at the first endocrinology visit?

Dr. Shah reviews your history, medicines, and recent test results, and talks through your priorities and daily routine. She may order more blood tests, a thyroid ultrasound, or a bone density scan, and the results shape the plan you make together.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring a photo ID, a list of your current medicines and supplements, and recent results such as an A1C, thyroid tests, or a bone density scan. If you check your blood sugar at home, bring your meter or glucose sensor readings.
